Governor Gavin Newsom has refused Canadian water aid for California’s wildfires, opting to ‘fight fire with innovation’ instead, sources have confirmed.
Despite raging wildfires and a dire drought, Newsom rejected the generous offer from Canada, worried that such a large amount of foreign water might water down the state’s proud tradition of self-reliance during environmental crises.
The decision has sparked a heated debate across the parched state. While some praise Newsom’s dedication to Californian water sovereignty, others are baffled by his strategy to combat flames with what he describes as “cutting-edge fire-resistant thoughts and prayers.” Critics have pointed out that thoughts and prayers are notoriously poor at containing actual fires, unlike, say, vast quantities of water.
In response to backlash, Newsom has launched an initiative to educate flames on the benefits of staying within containment lines through a series of motivational speeches and Instagram influencer campaigns. “If we can influence people, why not fires?” Newsom optimistically posited at a recent press conference.
As of press time, the fires appeared unresponsive to social media efforts, prompting Newsom’s team to consider whether adding more hashtags might finally quench the flames.
